Financial Aid for Graduate Students

Christopher Newport University's Office of Financial Aid provides links to financial aid forms, as well as information on due dates and financial aid in general.  This page provides information specific to graduate students, particularly regarding outside grants and scholarships.

Student Eligibility
To qualify for financial aid, a student must satisfy all of the following conditions. More detailed eligibility information can be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid.

  • admitted as a degree-seeking graduate student
  • enrolled on at least a half-time basis, however some programs may require full-time enrollment
  • in good academic standing
  • making satisfactory academic progress

Graduate Assistantships
Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis. A graduate student may receive an assistantship for a combination of four semesters and two summers in a two year period. Types of assistantship activities: teaching and/or related activities, research and/or related activities, or administration
(e.g., of tutorial programs).

Criteria: Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate degree-seeking student taking a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 9 credit hours in the semester of the award.

Application Procedures: For a graduate assistantship application contact the Office of Graduate Studies or the respective Program Coordinator.
Submit the application along with the following:

  • scores from the standardized test required for program admission
  • graduate grade point average
  • undergraduate grade point average
  • two letters of reference
  • and an essay explaining how the award will further career goals

    • Peterson's boasts access to information on 1.6 million scholarships.
  3. Fastweb
    • Database of over 180,000 funding sources.
    • Register at the site by answering a series of questions about your background and interests.
    • Will email you when a new scholarship fits your profile.
    • Nice tracking for deadlines and amounts, but have to navigate through promotional offers.
  4. Wiredscholar
    • From Sallie Mae, includes general information on financing college education.
    • Register at the site by answering a series of questions about your background and interests.
  5. Scholarship Resource Network Express
    • Database of over 8,000 programs with a distribution level of over 150,000 awards.
    • Also includes student loan forgiveness programs for those who have graduated from college and need alternatives for repayment.
  6. Free Scholarship Search
    • 5,383 organizations offering over 486,354 scholarship awards.
    • Helpful tips on applying for scholarships and avoiding scams.
